Hypnotherapy or Hypnosis work, can be better understood by breaking the word into
- Hypnosis – a heightened state of suggestibility
- Therapy – using Hypnosis as a therapeutic modality, to address deep psychological issues.
According to the U.S government, Hypnosis, is the bypass of the Critical Factor and acceptance of acceptable selective thinking. And has been around for over 200 years!
Hypnotherapy is completely safe and scientific. Like so many medical bodies across the globe, The American Medical Association too, has long accepted its efficacy. It is also used as an analgesic during surgeries and widely used by dentists.
Hypnosis has also been used as a therapeutic modality, by well known psychologists and psychiatrists since several decades, such as Dr Sigmund Freud, (considered the Father of modern Psychology), Carl Jung etc. and found to be extremely effective.
The sub conscious mind, the repository of all memories and impressions, is far more powerful than the conscious mind. Just as Psychotherapy or Talk Therapy works with the conscious mind, Hypnosis work or Hypnotherapy, works directly with the sub conscious.
The Hypnotherapist uses relaxation techniques to relax and guide you, into a focussed state of consciousness, leading to heightened suggestibility, so that the sub conscious mind, can be directly accessed, in order to resolve various challenges in your life.
It is facilitated by a trained and certified Hypnotherapist. However, it is your own mind that works on the problem, at a sub conscious level, albeit under the guidance of a trained therapist.
Age-Regression and Past Life Regression Therapy (PLRT) are also used in Hypnosis, to diagnose and treat issues. PLRT is normally used in a context for which, better understanding is sought, for recurring patterns of life circumstances.
Some Issues Treated with Hypnotherapy Include:
Physical and Mental Health related issues, all kinds of Fears and Phobias, Emotional Conflicts / Relationship issues, Childhood Traumas, Self-esteem / Confidence issues, Smoking / Alcohol and other substance addictions, Weight loss, Depression, Anxiety, Asthma, Allergies and other related disorders.
Past Life Regression Therapy (PLRT)
Often, issues in our current life have roots in a previous one, wherein, either they were left unresolved, hence carried over, or the soul needs to be reminded, at a subconscious level, that it need not bring them into the present life, especially since the related past life is over.
PLRT is thus grounded in the theory of reincarnation, recognising the notion of Karma, and shares this belief with various religions. The concept of soul / energy memory being impressed and carried forward in the sub conscious mind, through multiple lifetimes, is commonly accepted in cultures leaning towards spirituality.
PLRT also uses hypnosis to deeply relax the conscious mind, so that the sub conscious may be accessed. The therapist then gently guides you to a past life related to your current issue, in order to work with that soul / energy memory and resolve the issue.
Even medical conditions like Asthma, for instance, have been cured by Past Life Regression Therapy. Well known psychiatrist and author Dr Brian Weiss, and others, have documented several cases, successfully treating issues with PLRT.

The Hypnotherapist is never in control of you or your mind because you are never asleep. Therefore, the process is completely scientific and safe… so you can relax… literally and figuratively.
You are guided into a state of focussed consciousness and deep relaxation, after which your issues are therapeutically worked on, at a subconscious level – by your own mind! However, a trained Hypnotherapist effectively facilitates the process.
No you are not unconscious. In fact you will always be conscious at one level, during the session. At no point do you lose control of your senses or are not in control of them. Furthermore since you are not asleep, you can even choose not to share some of your insights with your therapist or automatically reject suggestions you don’t like. Nonetheless, your therapist is professionally and ethically bound by confidentiality.
At every stage of the session, your permission is sought and if not granted, your therapist cannot continue. It is you, who is pretty much in control of the session. Depending on the level of hypnosis you are in, you may even remember the experience, gaining a new understanding and eventually, acceptance, of your issues.
The number of sessions you may need will depend upon the complexity of your issue and decided by your therapist. Each session can take an hour or slightly more.
Physical and Mental Health related issues, all kinds of Fears and Phobias, Emotional Conflicts / Relationship issues, Childhood Traumas, Self-esteem / Confidence issues, Smoking /Alcohol addiction, Weight loss, Anxiety, Depression, Asthma, Allergies and other related disorders.
Coming out of hypnosis takes just a couple of seconds so no, you don’t stay there. You can emerge out of Hypnosis anytime you want. No matter which memory may be accessed – it’s only the memory, of an event that’s already over.
