A Practicum in REBT Child and Adolescence

The Practicum in Child and Adolescence was primarily designed by Dr Ann Vernon, Past President of Albert Ellis Institute and author of numerous books on the subject, and is a four-day certificate course on applying principles and strategies of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for children and adolescents. However, now also offered on a Live Remote (Online) platform, it is spread over eight days, with three hours of lecture or supervised peer counselling, each day.

Highlights of REBT Child & Adolescence Practicum

  • An Intensive and specialized training in the application of globally acclaimed evidence based therapy.
  • Not just REBT skills but also specific tools, like creative games and exercises, especially devised and aimed at making the ABC model developmentally appropriate for children and adolescents, by Dr Vernon.
  • Innovative strategies for dealing with disorders like depression, anxiety, anger, procrastination, self-acceptance, grief, stress, ADHD, ODD/conduct disorders, etc. in children and adolescents, through simple yet novel interventions.
  • Dr Vernon’s methodology in REBT, is an eye-opener to effective parenting, providing extremely beneficial parenting techniques.

Lectures and Supervised Peer Counselling, would be for 12 hours each, during the tenure of the course. Skill development is given prime importance, so that participants get ample practice to hone their skills before they get ready to apply them on the job.

Practicing REBT with Supervised Peer Counselling - Participants will be assigned to small groups of no more than eight. A certified Training Faculty, will supervise the group, with participants practicing REBT with each other in dyads. Participants will be asked to bring up real problems (at their discretion) and each will have an opportunity to be a therapist and then a client. Participants will receive in vivo supervision of their demonstrated skills.

The certification is awarded by the Albert Ellis Institute, on successful completion of the training.


Please note that the eligibility pre requisite for this course, is the completion of the REBT  Primary Practicum (which means candidates must have a certificate awarded by AEI). Certificates for the REBT Child and Adolescence Practicum will be awarded by AEI, NY.

Open to psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychiatrists, homeopaths, social workers, physicians, nurses and other mental health and allied professionals.

The minimum educational qualification for the Child and Adolescence Practica Certificate is one of the following -

  • Master’s degree in Psychology
  • Counselling, or Marriage and Family therapy
  • MSW, Registered nurse (state certified) and
  • Other mental health professionals (e.g., alcoholism counsellors) and students still studying, will receive a Paraprofessional Certificate.

Students and other members of allied helping professionals are eligible for the course, but will not receive the Professional Certificate until minimal degree requirements are met. (They may, however, be eligible for the Paraprofessional Certificate). Upon completion of the required educational requirements, they may apply for the Professional Certification.

Ann Vernon, Ph.D., Sc.D., is Past President of the Albert Ellis Board of Trustees and one of the first Diplomates of the Albert Ellis Institute. She is the former Director of the Midwest Center for REBT and was selected by the American Psychological Association to do a counseling video demonstration entitled Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Over Time: Psychotherapy in Six Sessions. Dr. Vernon is recognized as the leading international expert in clinical applications of RE&CBT with children and adolescents and has written over 50 books, chapters, and articles about counseling this population, including Thinking, Feeling, Behaving: An Emotional Education Curriculum, What Works When with Children and Adolescents: A Handbook of Individual Counseling Techniques, The Passport Program, and More What Works When with Children and Adolescents. Dr. Vernon was a university professor and had a large private practice, specializing in working with children and adolescents and their parents. She currently conducts REBT training programs at affiliate training centers throughout the world. For many years she has been an active presenter, offering workshops on a variety of topics related to counseling children and adolescents, couples, and REBT.

  • Gauri Row Kavi – Associate Fellow and Training Faculty Level 2 - AEI; Founder of  Self Align – An Affiliated Training Center of Albert Ellis Institute, New York.

Gauri Row Kavi, MA (Psychology), PGDM (Counselling Psychology), is a Psychotherapist and a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), U.S.A. She has also received training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, from the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research, Philadelphia. U.S.A. Gauri is also trained in other psychotherapies like Transactional Analysis (T.A), is a certified Integrated Clinical Hypnotherapist and a Master Practitioner in Gestalt and Neuro Lingusitic Programming (NLP). A Certified Professional Behaviour Analyst (CPBA) and Certified Professional Values Analyst (CPVA) from Trimetrix, U.S.A; a certified practitioner of various personality profiles like MBTI, 16 PF, E.Q etc., Gauri also counsels students and professionals on entry level and mid career transitions. She has coached and trained thousands of professionals in India and overseas, for two decades. Gauri has also conducted several webinars, spoken at forums and trained students from prestigious educational institutes. Mental health professionals and students have benefited greatly from her courses in REBT.

What is the difference between this training and the one offered in New York? Are they equivalent?

The course content, duration of training and supervision are exactly the same. The faculty from Albert Ellis Institute, Dr Ann Vernon (Past President - AEI) will lecture the participants. Additional faculty will be Gauri Row Kavi.

Are there any discounts?

Due to the pandemic situation, the course is already being offered at a discounted fee.

Am I eligible?

Please check the eligibility criteria mentioned. If you are not in the criteria, you will have to apply for a paraprofessional certificate.

Can I practice REBT after this training? Is this a license to practice REBT?

You may certainly practice skills learned as a psychologist or a counsellor. Although, you may need to check local laws in your country, about practicing psychotherapy in general.


Attendees understand that the Certificate isn't a license to practice psychotherapy. Attendees will check the laws governing psychotherapy in their area. Seats shall be considered reserved only when a payment is received. The inclusions are tuition, training, supervision, course material and certificate. Attendees shall maintain the decorum of the training and shall not audio/videotape the lectures/peer counselling. Attendees also shall not violate copyrights to the printed/online material shared with in the training. The rights of admission to the workshop are reserved with Gauri Row Kavi. The certificate is issued from New York and may take few months to be received at my address and is subject to satisfactory completion of fully filled up application form (you will receive after full payment), supervision, lecture hours and passing the required tests as prescribed by the International Training Standards and Policy Review Committee (ITSPRC). The organisers have the right to change the details of the program e.g. the timing, just in case there is something unavoidable.

* Please note, that at the end of this training, participants will be asked to complete an exam. A passing grade on the exam (70%), along with satisfactory reviews by supervisors, from the peer counselling sessions are required for awarding the certificate. In case someone doesn't pass, a grace period of one month will be given, to prove they are adequate in their skills (the process would be explained during the course).
